Fresh Inspiration for Springtime

1 August 2022

Are you planning to build a fence and are wondering how to reduce its cost? Based on our many years of experience in the fencing industry, we suggest where to look for savings and when it is better to give them up. Below, we present a few tried and tested methods to reduce the cost of fencing, which at the same time will not affect its quality.

When planning the construction of a house, the issues related to its fencing are often secondary. It seems that with such a big challenge as erecting and finishing the building, installing a fence will only be an addition to the entire investment. Meanwhile, when it comes down to it, it turns out that you sometimes have to reach deeper into your pocket than you would like. What can you do to reduce the expenses related to fencing?

Impressive front and functional sides

Building a representative fence at the front of the building and fencing the rest of the property with chain link fencing or stock fencing is an increasingly common – and most importantly effective – method of reducing costs. When your plot is directly adjacent to a forest or other real estate (often already fenced), it is a practical and aesthetic solution that allows you to save not only money, but also time. And as we all know, time is money.

If you have planned planting some greenery along the borders of the plot, remember that over time the vegetation will create an additional, natural barrier, and at the same time will hide the fence, so it doesn’t make sense to overpay for fencing.

Less steel – lower price

Saving on materials – is it always a bad idea? Not necessarily. If you happen to be on a tight budget, you will have to compromise. Situations in which there is no need to look for intermediate solutions are rare, especially in construction. We recommend the use of materials of optimal quality, i.e. those that will ensure that, under certain conditions, the fence will fulfill its role.

If your neighborhood is secluded and sheltered from the wind, e.g. by a wall of forest, consider a lighter version of a fence. Stock fencing would be best for that application as it is very discreet and doesn’t disturb the landscape. Most of all it is also the cheapest option.

The same rule applies to metal posts. Less steel is needed to produce those with a circle cross-section rather than for rectangular supports, but they are less resistant to mechanical damage and bending. Since they are the backbone of the entire structure, they must be solid. The optimal choice is square poles with 4 cm × 4 cm equal sides. The narrower side of the posts also means smaller clamps connecting the fence elements – another saving.

You can also always go with wooden posts. They are very cheap and almost equally as durable, if well impregnated. The most popular are those made out of affordable pine wood. If you decide to use wooden posts, remember to impregnate them properly. Wood is a material that is extremely susceptible to the effects of weather conditions, such as rains, strong winds or sun. Wood that is not impregnated will quickly deteriorate and rot.

Prefabricated foundation instead of concrete

If you are planning on setting the fence in a foundation, it is worth using ready-made semi-finished products for the construction under the fence. That way you can avoid the costs associated with the construction of the formwork and significantly reduce those related to the purchase, pouring and reinforcement of concrete. This solution also significantly speeds up the work – there is no waiting time for sufficient bonding and hardening of the concrete before proceeding to the next stages of assembly.

Buying fencing from proven brands and local companies

When buying a fence, we recommend using proven brands. Reliable companies with an established market position ensure quality and provide guarantees for their products. By choosing the cheaper “no name” option, you risk problems with complaints and repeated repairs. Therefore, your savings, in the long run, may turn out to be apparent.

Assembling the fence on your own or choosing a team of professionals?

Self-assembly can be profitable when our plot is small and located on a flat and stable ground. However, the most important thing is to know what you are doing. If you do not have the appropriate knowledge, you should get it before starting the work. Considering the time you will have to spend on acquiring the know-how and completing the rest of the steps (purchasing or renting the necessary equipment for the construction, assembly time, any errors that may occur throughout the process, etc.), it is definitely worth considering hiring a professional team.

Specialized companies have the appropriate tools, knowledge and skills to improve the assembly. Most often they also have developed – unattainable for a one-time client – conditions with surveyors, suppliers of heavy equipment and cement plants, thanks to which they can offer more favorable prices for services.

5 ways to reduce the cost of a fence

  • Place a representative, more expensive fence at the front of the building and choose wire mesh for all the sides and the back
  • Choose optimal materials, strictly adapted to the functions of the fence and the conditions in which it will stand. Often, the use of the strongest and expensive solutions is not justified
  • If you decide to install the fence on a foundation, build it from ready-made elements, prepared in advance at the factory
  • Search for fencing from reputable brands
  • Build the fencing on your own, but only if you know how to do it. Otherwise, outsource the work to specialists
