Installation of a fence mesh on uneven terrain
What to do when your plot is located on uneven ground and you want to fence it? If you cannot level the surface with heavy equipment, all you have to do is build a fence that will be adapted to the existing conditions. What is the installation of a fence mesh on a sloping ground? You can find tips in our article.
Mesh fence on uneven ground – start with measurements
Before you buy a material for the fence of your plot, you should make field measurements and find out what the angle of inclination of its surface is. You can find data on this subject in the maps prepared by the surveyor, or you can calculate the slope of the terrain yourself – for this you need to collect some data: relative height and length between two opposite points.
How to calculate the slope angle of the terrain? Divide the height by the length, then multiply by 100 percent. There is a principle in the fencing industry that fences located on plots with an inclination angle of more than 24 percent should be additionally strengthened, for example by building individual sections in a cascade system (most often these are panel spans).
Installation of a mesh fence on a slope
If you want to have a durable and aesthetic fence with galvanized or coated mesh, install it by an experienced team of professionals who will use the appropriate fence construction technique. On uneven terrain, it is best to set the mesh parallel to the ground, without the use of the so-called stepping – the foundation falling along the plot border in the form of steps.
How to plan the layout of the next sections of the fence on uneven terrain? You must remember to keep the proportions and the same spacing of 2.5 or 3 m between the successive center and initial posts. Correct placement of the posts is also of key importance in the context of the durability and stability of the mesh fence – they should be precisely positioned vertically and deeply concreted, below the ground freezing level (80-100 cm, depending on the region).
How to make a mesh fence on uneven terrain?
When you have the material and start building a mesh fence on a sloping plot, you should start work by marking out the starting posts (in the place of the future gate) and the corner posts. Only after you have determined their position, can you use the measuring tape and the posts to determine the position of the central posts. If the terrain has significant unevenness, use a distance of 2.5 m instead of 3 m to make the net more stable.
Secure the corner posts with additional side supports (struts), which will strengthen the posts and take their load over the course of many years of use. When the concrete starts to dry, check the setting. The supports should also be concreted (vertical and horizontal) of all columns, and if necessary – place additional side reinforcements made of boards or bars on uneven ground for the time of setting.
Installation of a fence mesh on a sloping plot: how to do it?
After positioning the load-bearing elements, you can proceed to the installation of the fence mesh. For this purpose, you need a few tools and accessories: clamps, tensioners, galvanized wire (or: galvanized, PVC coated) intended to stabilize the net along its entire length, vias and tension rods (flat bars). Pliers, a cutter and a spirit level are also required to control the position of the mesh during the work.
Spread the net on a flat surface and set an equal height at the top and bottom (this is necessary because when you unwind the roll, it often turns out that the eyelet line is uneven). If necessary, connect the pieces of mesh using the single zigzag wire attached to the roll. Attach the tensioners to the starting posts and the grommets – to the middle posts. Pass the tension rods through the ends of the net. Start the assembly by stretching the wire in the upper part, hook the ends of the net on it, attach the rods to the posts, thread the middle and bottom wires, and finally tighten the net again.
