Stock fence is an affordable and durable type of mesh, made in various sizes. Perfect for fencing forest areas, fields, orchards, as well as highways. Hinge joint fencing is suitable for all types of stock and is used for cattle, sheep, pigs and dogs etc. Due to their easy assembly and disassembly, they are also suitable for temporary fencing of construction sites or private areas. The so called “forest net” can be mounted on wooden pales with staples, as well as on special metal posts. It is an effective, economical method of separating and protecting livestock, dividing fields and creating boundaries. Stock fencing is available in a number of grades and roll sizes to suit different applications. In addition as all of our products, wire used to produce them is galvanized which greatly increases their durability.

When choosing from many different kinds of stock fencing, firstly we have to define what height we are interested in. Next step is to determine what size of mesh we need. In standard, most affordable types, distance between wires is 15-20 cm horizontally and 30 cm vertically. However, we can choose a mesh which is denser in the lower part, than the standard one. Therefore we need to determine how many additional horizontal wires we need. Additional horizontal wires tighten the holes in the bottom of the mesh. Thanks to the greater density of wire the stock fence fulfills its role and protects your area even better.

There is also the third parameter of each mesh – the distance between vertical wires. Rather than reducing distance between horizontal wires, we can also reduce the distance between the vertical wires. These stock fence weights more than their counterparts with sparse structure. It will also affect their durability and flexibility.

Stock fence marking scheme:
X / Y / Z
where:

  • X – height (available sizes from 60 cm to 200 cm)
  • Y – number of horizontal wires (this number differs depending on the model)
  • Z – distance between vertical wires (available sizes: 30cm, 15cm, 10cm)

Types of fencing in agriculture

We have previously explained to our readers that there are different types of fencing in agriculture. It should also be mentioned that the type of livestock fencing required will be dependent on the type of livestock kept within the fence. For this reason, we frequently receive several questions about fence types. What type of fence is best for cows? And how about horses? Is there any difference between fencing for a sheep and fencing for a cow? Please do not worry. We have answers for all these questions. Firstly and most importantly, in order to understand your fencing needs, you will need to determine what livestock you will keep within the fencing. It is easy to imagine that fences for chickens will be significantly different from fencing for horses. These will differ primarily in the height of the fence, but also in its resistance to external factors. Let us give you an example. Chicken wire is best for chickens as well as other small livestock, and cattle panels are a better solution for cattle and horses. This may lead to questions such as what type of fence is best for cows? What type of fence is best for sheep? When it comes to cattle and horse fences, electric fencing may be sometimes used. However, there is usually no such need when it comes to chicken fencing. For electric net fencing, you may require some plastic step-in posts to mark gates or to reinforce parts of the fence. Once you know what kind of livestock will be kept inside the fences, this is then the right moment to determine what type of fence needs to be built on your farm. You need to know if you want a permanent or a temporary fence. Temporary fencing is a great choice, if you keep livestock on your farm seasonally, because it is easy to install, move and remove, if you don’t need it anymore. Permanent fences are a better choice for long-term use. Permanent fencing makes it harder for your animals to escape and a well-built permanent fence can withstand almost all weather conditions, which is not the case when it comes to temporary livestock fencing. Once you know what kind of fencing you need in terms of its permanency, you need to start deciding on other factors such as its height and material. Your choice will most likely depend on how long the fence-line needs to be and on how much money you are willing to spend on all the supplies. Selecting the fencing material also sounds like a challenge but in fact it is not. You can choose amongst woven wire, barbed wire, mesh wire fences etc. You also need to decide if you need an electric fence. An electric fence is a secure method for either temporary or permanent fencing. For the next step you will need a ruler, a protractor, a pencil, paper, and an eraser to create a drawing to help you figure out an efficient plan for your fencing. It is crucial to remember the length of each fence-line, the length of gates and where you want to place your gates. This may have an impact on the final price of your agricultural fencing. Agricultural fencing prices may differ depending on the fence type. Do not forget to plan out what kind of corner braces may be needed for your fence. You seem ready! Using surveyor tape, mark out all of your fence lines, corners, lanes, and gates that you planned in the previous steps. The next step is the easiest one – call Fences24 and purchase your fencing supplies. Should you have any questions or doubts, please do not hesitate to ask our team for advice. We are proud to call ourselves one of the best sellers in agricultural fencing in the UK.

Tools for building fences on the farm

Building a fence may sound like a challenge, but with a well-equipped toolbox, building a livestock fence becomes an easy job. In this article we will provide you with a guide to planning your agricultural farm fencing. As easy as it may sound, a lot of work goes into getting livestock fencing just right. The process starts with deciding between woven wire, barbed wire, electric, or another material that’s available on the market which may be suitable for your farm livestock fencing. It is also important to understand what kind of tools will be required for building fences on your farm. If you’re only just getting started with livestock fencing for your farm, you will need a few basic tools that can easily be found in any garage. First things first – safety.  You need to get yourself a pair of heavy leather gloves and safety glasses. Gloves will protect your hands from sharp fence wire edges, especially while cutting the fence. Leather work gloves are a better choice due to their durability and ease of movement. A good claw hammer is a must, when you’re planning to build any farm fence. The next tool you will need is a simple shovel. Not to worry, there is no need to spend money on a new one. The shovel you have in your garage will be just fine. However, the tool you may not have in your garage is a post-hole digger. Similarly however, this is no reason to worry as you can easily rent it.  You will probably also need a fence tensioner and wire cutters. Whilst using wire cutters it is important to remember about our rule that safety always comes first. Put your gloves and glasses on before starting to work on your farm fencing. You are not likely to have tools such as a tamping tool, post pounder, electric fence tester and chainsaw in your garage, but you can rent them if you need them. Later, for fence repair you may need a crimping tool, which is essentially a tool that conjoins two pieces of metal. The tools mentioned in the article above will help you install and maintain your agricultural fence. Depending on the fence type, you might not need all of them, especially the larger equipment discussed here.
