Types of posts in different fences

17 November 2022

In today’s article, we will list the different types of fence posts along with their application in the appropriate type of fence. In general, the 5 most common types of bar are used, which are given below. This will make it easier for you to choose the right posts for your fence.

  1. Pipe posts (round) – this is the oldest and most popular type of post. These are the so-called round bars. Most often, the diameter of the main posts is 48 mm, and the support posts are 42 or 38 mm. They are most often used in mesh fencing, but thanks to special clamps, you can also attach fencing panels to them. Most often they come in two versions – galvanized and galvanized and powder coated. Due to the much greater durability, we recommend galvanized and powder coated posts.
  2. Profile posts (most often rectangular – 60X40 mm) – posts in mass sale appeared later than round posts. But after all, profile fences are not new. 60X40 posts are also called system posts. These posts are designed for panel fencing. And in this role they are perfect. They are stiff and durable. No supports are needed in system fences. So we mainly have one post size and it is the previously mentioned 60 X40 mm. These posts are also available in galvanized or galvanized and powder coated versions. As in the case of round posts, we recommend the latter option. The price difference is small, but the durability is much greater.
  3. Posts with a ridge – this is a special type of posts intended for fixing welded mesh fencing. Due to their special design, they allow for fixing the welded meshes to the back with special, most often stainless, clips clamped on the mesh and on the back with special tongs. These posts are manufactured on the basis of round posts. Due to the ridge, they have the shape of a semicircle with a ridge for attaching the mesh. These posts are usually galvanized and powder coated green. They are therefore resistant to weather conditions and will serve us for many years.
  4. Steel forest net posts – another less known type of fence posts after posts with a ridge. Steel forest net posts are much more durable than wooden posts. The posts for forest nets are relatively light, as they are made similar to the channel section, as if one wall was subtracted from the full profile. What is very important, steel posts for forest nets are galvanized, so they are resistant to weather conditions. In addition, they already have a cut place for horizontal wires in the forest mesh. So the assembly of the forest net is simple and does not require any additional accessories. Only one tool – a hammer.
  5. Wooden posts for forest nets – this type of posts is especially popular at construction sites. Wooden posts are most often round logs purchased at a sawmill. They are the cheapest of all the types of bars mentioned above. But they also have the least durability. Without additional protection, they will stand for a few years, but later, especially near the ground, the wood will start to lose its strength. However, in the case of several years of construction, they will work perfectly. Connecting forest nets to these posts is relatively simple. All we need is a hammer and a staple. Staples driven into the wood will secure the forest net well.

In conclusion, we have familiarized ourselves with the five basic types of bars. Each one is suitable for a specific type of mesh. Only round steel posts can be used in two types of fences. We hope you found this article helpful and help you get acquainted with the topic of popular types of fence posts.
